Crafted using the same recipe as for Rebel Yell Kentucky Straight Bourbon (80 Proof), this wheated bourbon was announced in April 2019 in conjunction with new Rebel Yell labels and bottles. It is a permanent addition to the Rebel Yell product line. A new whiskey from Rebel Yell, this bourbon is made with the same wheated mashbill as the rest of the lineup. It’s bottled at 50% ABV, as compared to 40% ABV for regular Rebel Yell bourbon. This whiskey is debuting with updated packaging, which will be rolled out across the Rebel Yell range.…

About the brand

The W.L. Weller & Sons company was founded in 1849 by William Larue Weller, who pioneered using wheat instead of rye in his mash for a lighter flavor than the older style of bourbons. The W.L. Weller company merged with the Stitzel distilling company (est. 1872) to form the Stitzel-Weller distilling company in 1910. The "Rebel Yell" brand was created for Stitzel-Weller in the mid-1900s by Charles R. Farnsley (a former mayor of Louisville) around the 100th anniversary of the original Weller company, with the idea of distilling it in limited batches for exclusive distribution in the Southern United States. In the early 1980s, after some other changes of ownership following the break-up of Stitzel-Weller around 1972, the brand was purchased by the David Sherman Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri (now Luxco). By 1984, Rebel Yell was distributed nationally.

Light and smooth as youd anticipate from a wheated whiskey yet has a marginally darker profile than a few... more earthy colored sugar sweet than fake sugars trace of nutty flavors and a pleasant cinnamon heat. Some natural product on the button and inconspicuously on the sense of taste. Great shiver to the consume that keeps going long enough . Pleasant particularly at the cost. Last number: 88

Scents pleasant crisp spring day. On the sense of taste sweet smooth for the confirmation. Thicker than anticipated. Sweet yet not all that much. Walnut nibs toward the end waits a piece. Needs profundity however a charming sipper. 7/4/19

Tasting Notes

Nose

The nose is quite approachable due to how light it is for a 100 proof bourbon. It doesn’t have much depth and is straightforward with hints of hay and corn up front, and light scents of oak, caramel, and ethanol that linger behind. While the scents aren’t bad in nature, it’s certainly disappointing how little overall depth this nose delivers for a 100 proof bourbon.

Taste

The sip’s oily mouthfeel is immediately noticeable and is slightly sweet overall. While notes of oak, vanilla, light leather, wheat grain, corn oil, and white pepper are all present, they’re largely straightforward. The palate is hard to fall in love with, but also hard to find fault with it either.

Finish

The finish starts with oak, corn, leather, and sweet vanilla. It’s medium in length, with layered heat, pepper, and oak on the backend. The finish encapsulates what this bourbon represents; straightforward, to the point, and one that isn’t bad, but won’t leave a lasting impression once you finish off your glass.
