Following the successful release of their classic bourbon expression, the brand has decided to move to its more natural progression, that being good ol’ rye whiskey – a spirit that is slowly gaining popularity and one that holds a special place in May’s heart. Each batch of Clyde May's Straight Rye Whiskey is distilled in Indiana at MGP from a proprietary mash bill consisting of at least 51% rye before being aged for 3 years in charred American oak casks. These are then shipped to Alabama where they are brought to proof using fresh Alabama spring water and bottled to create a robust rye expression that works well whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed.…

Scents of zest some cinnamon and pleasantness. Starts off with better notes and afterward a warm flavor enters. Completions dry with an a trace of straw. Great flavor and not very unforgiving. Very great.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Youthful hints of sweet vanilla, corn, light rye grain, green apple, and ripe honeydew. The scents work as a nice way to start the sip, however the youth of the whiskey is more prevalent than I would have preferred.

Taste

Lightly charred oak, green peppercorn, and green apples mix with sweeter flavors of vanilla, syrup, and hints of toasted brown sugar. The spice is more noticeable in the sip versus the nose, however it comes across as slightly unbalanced.

Finish

Fresh baked bread, corn, and sweet vanilla all lay on top of a lingering rye spice note. The spice lasts for a surprisingly long time and is one of the highlights of the sip.
